Kelly Loeffler, former Georgia senator, to run Small Business Administration

The Senate confirmed former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler on Wednesday to lead the Small Business Administration.

In her new position, Loeffler will oversee the only federal cabinet agency dedicated to providing small businesses with counseling, capital, and contracting expertise, according to the agency’s website. President Donald Trump stated in December that she will also prioritize efforts to combat waste, fraud, and regulatory overreach.

In the confirmation hearing, Loeffler stated that the SBA would be conducting “a full-scale audit” to “uncover any improper spending”.

Her confirmation passed along party lines with a 52-46 vote, with Senator Jacky Rosen as the only Democrat to support her appointment.

Loeffler previously served in the Senate from 2020 to 2021, having been appointed by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to fill the seat vacated by former Senator Johnny Isakson due to health concerns. During her tenure, she aligned with Trump’s policies 80% of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight. She later ran in the 2020 special election to retain her seat but was defeated by Senator Raphael Warnock, D-Ga.

Before her political career, Loeffler was the co-owner of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream and held leadership roles in financial services firms, including Intercontinental Exchange. She is married to Jeffrey Sprecher, chairman of the New York Stock Exchange.

“America’s entrepreneurs are one of our greatest assets, and they have a big role to play in our future prosperity. Sen. Loeffler will be their champion,” said Senator John Thune, R-S.D., on Wednesday.
